Illustrating Alternative Urban Imaginaries
This talk argues that ‘landscape’ is a social and ideological construct. A good example for this is the imaginary of the picturesque English rustic idyll, which materializes around 1800 in the context of the industrial revolution and a steady increase of British imperial power. Arguably the idea of the ‘green and pleasant land’ emerges as a counterpoint to those developments and continues to possess significant cultural currency today.
This presentation will explore the potential of divergent picturings of place to open up discursive spaces that enable an engagement with alternative imaginaries.
